Our Breeding Principles
Our Goals:
Our breeding program consists of European and South African bloodlines. That we try to continue to breed the correct type, loving - intelligent - stable temperament aswell as structural balance and functional correctness.
Our Philosophy:
A great lesson to be learned is to honour those before us. They made it to the top because of a lot of hard work and devotion, skill and expertise. So to honour what they did, we have to ensure to keep inmind what they set out to do, and stay true to the breed, that they were intended to be, healthy and are built to perform the function they were bred for.
How to adopt a pup from us:
- We plan our Saint Bernard litters very carefully and research the bloodlines, before contemplating to breed a litter.
- To acquire one of our pups, it is advised to contact us and place your name on our waiting list.
- When you contact us, we like to know more about you, each pup is precious to us, and we want to get to know more about his new master/s. They are our passion, and we will ALWAYS love to talk about our beloved breed.
- For first time Saint Bernard owners we have a informational booklet that we give you that we compiled about the breed. To help you decide if a Saint Bernard is the right breed for you. As well as a brief history about the breed. Which gender will suit your family better, exercise, feeding, grooming ect. It is of utmost importance that you are 100% sure that a Saint Bernard is the companion suited best for you. In temperament and lifestyle in total. Buying a pup is a commitment for the rest of the dog's life and in actual fact this applies to any breed; you must be a match in every sense of the word. I always tell people that when you decide to buy a puppy it is because you want a companion to share your life with, and your time and friends, and home ect, and you are looking to love a best friend - who is always there for you and always depending on you.
- We have a puppy questionnaire that we ask prospective owners to complete to assess the best placement for each individual puppy, to a family who complement each other.
- When the pups are born we will contact you and send you a reservation document to complete. We send photos and videos of the pups as they grow, so you are included from their birth (it is amazing to see the pups grow and watch them in their developmental stages).
- Then we ask prospective buyers to complete a reservation document, for the reservation of specific puppy. No pup may leave before the age of 9 weeks.
- They receive their vaccination and deworming and veterinarian examination at 6 and 9 weeks. The vaccines take 3 weeks for the pup to build immunity.
The other reason is, that they still socialize with litter mates and Dam, and it's not fair to anyone to remove them earlier. From birth they are handled by us and aware of home life, being part of our home and family.
On the day of collection, we will go through the pup's file with you, with the information compiled by us, how to care and raise and train him, as well as additional information you will need to care for him for example his diet sheet ect. We will go through the contract with you and explain in detail what it consists of. We brought this pup into the world and have a responsibility towards him and like to receive photos or videos of him and regular updates.
We screen our prospective buyers very carefully because we want the best for each of our puppies. Therefore we have a contract of sale to be completed by each buyer.
Our pups are KUSA registered and breeders restrictions are placed on pups sold as companions.
We do sell to buyers who intend to show. We have sold Saint Bernards as breeding prospects to other kennels before. But here I ask a different contract to be completed to assure that the betterment of the breed stays the main purpose and the buyer has to have knowledge of the FCI breed standard and do research on the Saint Bernard breed.
The breeders restriction on puppy's that are sold as breeding prospects will only be lifted by me, if the Saint Bernard is of quality to be bred from.
There are guidelines to follow to choose breeding dogs, but remember they develop and sometimes they are not breeding material as adults.
We do our best to breed the correct Saint Bernards, but always remember that we have no control over genes - no matter how much you know about the bloodlines and ancestry - nature still has the last say, and anyone promising a breeding dog/bitch at 9 weeks is misleading people. Because not even the most experienced breeders that have bred for 50 plus years will put their reputation on the line for such a statement - because they have the skill, experience, knowledge not to make such statements).
And then also, the Saint Bernard's hips and elbows have to be tested at Onderstepoort before restrictions will be lifted.
It's advisable to learn as much as possible about the breed, there are true Saint Bernard breeders who will always be more than happy to discuss this gorgeous breed and share their knowledge. Always remember to set the reputable breeders apart from other breeders are the following: Their knowledge about the breed.
Good ethics in their breeding programs and care of their dogs.
Buyers be aware of unethical breeders.
Assesment of ethical respected breeders:
- Remember, they can sound and look like ethical breeders - but a bad attitude and slandering - is unbefitting a Ethical breeder!
Ethical breeders also do NOT speak ill of other breeders - because they have integrity and realise that they'll put themselves in a bad light aswell when they speak ill of other kennels/breeders.
An Ethical breeder is always there to help, and is committed to the said dog's life for the rest of his/her life. They keep in touch and want updated photos and videos and build a relationship with the buyers.
True ethical breeders are committed to their dogs and want to be involved in their lives.
Unethical breeders just want to sell a dog and have no interest in the dog after the sale.
An ethical breeder has contracts in place, for different circumstances.
A) Contract Of Sale:
Specifying that when circumstances may change, and buyer/s can no longer keep/care for the said dog that he/she be returned to the breeder. Where the breeder will assess the dog and place him/her with a family and home in the correct circumstance, where the said dog will fit in, and be happy and well cared for. We always assess the dog to find the best suited family.
B) Spay and Neuter Contracts: We have to keep the breeds best interest at heart. Not every dog is a show or breeding specimen. And one does not just breed because a dog is registered. The correct type, structure, temperament, movement and beauty defines a breeding dog. There must be a positive influence that grades said dog, to be a Contributor To The Betterment Of The Genepool And The Breed.
There is also a price difference between a show pup; breeding specimen; or a companion. If in the breeder's opinion the pup is not a contributor to betterment of the breed, and decides that said pup is going to be a companion only; he or she will be placed in a companion home - meaning people who's only interest is to have a companion.
- C) Contract for Prospective Breeding Dog or Bitch: (not a nice term, but in dogdom that is what females are called): Here total agreement is stipulated, and some amendments can be made between buyer and breeder, per individual circumstance. But still binding agreement, to protect the dog first of all, and breeder and buyer. There is also a reason for this contract, stating that health tests be done prior to breeding, dog is old enough to be bred from and also of breeding quality. The breeder will sign Contract of approval that said animal can be bred from after these above mentioned requirements have been met.
- D) Contract of Approval To Breed Dog Or Bitch.
E) Contract for Show Prospect:
A contract stipulating requirements, and agreement between buyer and breeder.
Resuming assessment of breeders:
An Ethical breeder has NO need to bad mouth other breeders. An unethical breeder will however talk ill about other breeders and their dogs to try and mislead people into thinking that their dogs are superior and try to make a quick sale.
- Some of these unethical breeders also try and manipulate the unsuspecting buyer in thinking that their dogs are the best, trying to mislead the buyer into not going to other breeders of the same breed to attain knowledge or see more specimens of the breed and win more knowledge in, for themselves, before buying.
- With unethical breeders it's just about numbers and not about the betterment of the breed. They think the more they produce the better.
- The offspring they have bred, will speak for themselves. So if the breeder refuses you to come to their home to meet their dogs, and you have to collect the puppy at another address, there is something wrong. That is a huge red flag; because why don't they want you at their premises.
- Be careful for people who try to convince you it is too far for you to drive or to difficult to find - there is a wonderful invention called GPS. And in my books if the puppy does not have to travel by plane, it is silly and troubling thought to have to pick the pup up at another destination. Because you want to meet the parents and see for yourself and experience their temperament. Aswell as everyday life of the dogs and how they interact with the breeder, his/her family and other dogs.
- Remember a breeder is not someone who "mates two dogs that they bought from other breeders", (usually they can't tell you much of the ancestry they are working with); and then claim to have bred those bloodlines.Because those dogs are still the other breeders work and expertise, and one cannot reign in another persons skill. Only after the 3rd generation, of your own keeps, out of your own dogs, that you have bred, from bloodlines you baught in; you can start saying - " this is my work". There are too many people these days basking in other peoples glory.
Give credit where credit is due, and honour those who created what you are working with today, and be and stay honest, to others and yourself.
Time - true ethical breeders stand the test of time, they devote their lives and years.
They buy from the most respectable kennels, many times, and at a point have to import to add bloodlines. This is a ongoing proses as you progress in your breeding program and see where you have to better certain traits.
